About Standard Kennel

The beginning

Our first dog was an adorable apricot Standard Poodle named Carmel. She had been purchased, from a distant kennel, as a show quality dog. When she arrived, it was clear that her adorable personality would never be enough to help her attain a conformation championship. A call to her breeder brought the horrific information that the adorable puppy might be destroyed if returned, because her kennel claimed only to sell show quality pups. We were appalled by that statement and would never send a puppy back under those circumstances so Carmel stayed with us as our adored family pet for thirteen years. That initial experience helped to form Standard Kennel's policy.

Standard Kennel Policy

• Every puppy deserves to be the best that can be bred. All dogs undergo genetic testing recommended for this breed. Those failing to pass any of these tests are spayed or neutered, removing that dog from a breeding program.
• Every breeding is planned and based on research to find complimenting attributes and genetic compatibility.
• Puppies are raised and socialized in our home.
• Each pup deserves the best possible home, where they will be loved and appreciated. Potential puppy home applicants are screened through a questionnaire and interview process.
• Every puppy undergoes "puppy profile testing" which is used to find their potential and determine placement on an individual basis.
• All puppies are registered. Transfer agreements include a Health Guarantee, a CKC Registered Non-Breeding Agreement, and Standard Kennel's Buy Back Contract, as well as registration documents.
• Standard Kennel retains co-ownership of any intact dogs intended for breeding purposes.
• Standard Kennel breeds for Intelligence, Health, Soundness, Temperament, Beauty, Style and Versatility

Standard Kennel Today

Standard Kennel does limited breeding with emphasis on producing all-round healthy Poodles destined to become trusted and loving family companions. Our Standard Poodles have proven themselves, by attaining Championships, Titles, Certificates and Recognition in Conformation, Agility, and Obedience, as well as, hunting and sporting events. They have been used in television ads, print advertising, children's entertainment, school education programs and therapy work. Some of our Standard Poodles have delighted audiences, as members of exuberant dog exhibition teams, where each Poodle willingly accepted hands-on attention by hundreds of children. At other times these Poodles have spent quiet hours visiting seniors' homes and hospitals in their role as therapy dogs. Our Standard Poodles are an important part of our family. They are content to share our lives. Whether the day brings action and excitement, or just relaxation at home, they share their warmth and care with their human companions.
